Diploma in Opthalmic Assistant

Opthalmic Assistant is an independent profession in eye care. Its practice includes a complete examination of the visual system for the estimation of refractive errors. It also covers the manufacturing, supply and fitting of spectacles, contact lenses and other optical aids.

The day-to-day activities of an Opthalmic comprise Case Histories, Refraction, Testing the Front and Back of the Eye, Colour Vision, Eye Pressure etc.

Job/Career Opportunities

There are all sorts of opportunities and roles within Opthalmic - you could be working with the general public and carrying out eye examinations in a high street optometrists, treating specific eye conditions in a hospital or clinic or carrying out essential research in a university or laboratory. You could also be working with people with low vision or developing and fitting cutting-edge contact lenses for all kinds of eye conditions. Opportunities exist in solo or group practices, multidisciplinary practice, health maintenance organizations, clinical or hospital settings, and government within the Public Health Service. Teaching and research offer added opportunities.
